The Russian Adoption Part II: The Final Chapter

Generally, the sequels are never as good as the originals, but we're anticipating our seocnd trip to Russia will be better than the first. Especially since we will leave their country with two parting gifts. Duty free and tax free ... but not free free,

We are in JFK's International Terminal waiting the 6 hour layover that we have before boarding our Aeroflot flight for Moscow. From there, we wait even longer, 11 hours or so, for our evening flight to Novosibirsk. Plenty of time to contemplate becoming parents, plenty of time to critique other parents as they pass by. Thank goodness we spent the extra money and are getting two children who don't scream, don't pout and sit in the middle of the terminal, and don't ask their parents for the most expensive thing on the airport menu, and then only eat 1/4 of it. That was money well spent.

Though that may have been the only money well spent in the last few days.

Our itinerary for this flight changed more often than Fran's mind when she's arranging furniture in the living room.

When we got back from Russia, the people with the agency in Russia said it would be four weeks. Our agency folks in this country said 6-8 weeks. Then we got a call from our agency folks 10 days ago saying we would need to leave Oct. 24. Then, just last Thursday, they called and said the court date had been moved up a week and we'd need to fly out in 6 days. Then they called back the next day and said -- because the judge had scheduled us in court at 1 p.m. Tuesday instead of 9 a.m., we would likely not have the paperwork in Moscow by Friday which means we'd need to stay the weekend, and oh by the way, Moscow govt is closed the last Monday of every month (forever to be known as the Snub The LeForts Holiday) and so we get our final paperwork etc... done on Tuesday, and return home Nov. 1.

At least that's the plan for now. So we wound up making about a half dozen flight bookings, half of which we changed, costing us hundreds of dollars in change fees, and at least 10 years of premature aging.

Oh, and then there's the $7.95 we paid just for the Internet access between these two flights in NY. That would average out to about $2.50 an hour, so I'm typing fast.

This adoption just keeps costing more and more money. Can't wait until we get ont he plane, and I can put my wallet in my carry-on bag.

Unless I buy one of their $7 beers to help me forget about how expensive it is to travel.
