May Blizzard

We're in a blizzard.

It began blizzarding last night around midnight and is still going strong. The TV station right now is saying that Rapid City has 11 inches of snow, but I don't know how it gets measured in a blizzard since it's blowing and drifting. Winds are 40-60 mh. We got a big snow drift against our sliding glass door, but just a few feet away you could see the bottom of the deck. Seems like just about everything is closed: schools, medical clinics, a huge chunk of I-90, the airport, Ellsworth Air Force Base. The police even said they'd ticket you if you're out driving a 2-wheel drive! Of course the newspaper can't close, and somehow Mikel made his way in to work with his 4-wheel drive. The toughest part was probably getting out of our driveway and onto this steep gravel drive that leads to the main road. I think he drove over a 4-foot snow drift to get through our driveway! I think he's one of about six people in the newsroom right now.

I can't really take the kids out to play because the snow is blowing so hard. Maybe if the winds die down later we can venture out. It's really not that cold.

Here are some photos and a little movie taken at 8 a.m.

Wow, I can't believe the photos! I have never in my 60 years been in a blizzard. It seems you cope with it really well. Please send more photos for us "southern sunshiners". We have been dodging tonados and thunderstorms though. Stay warm and safe. Love you all, Aunt Barb
